Timeline
If you or someone you know is dealing with the legal process, we understand just how frustrating it can be sometimes. The purpose of this page is to provide you with some insight and understanding of how long the legal process can take. While every case and process is unique, below is a timeline of what’s occurred for our family from a legal perspective.

April 20, 2007 – Day our father passed in the accident.

April 23, 2007 – First time we spoke to the detective assigned regarding the case.

April 24, 2007 – Held the funeral.

May 2007 – Hired a Civil Lawyer.

June 5, 2007 – Civil Attorney requested the official police report. We were initially informed that it would take 3-5 days to obtain the report, in actuality; it took nearly 2 months to obtain from the time the report was finished.

June 18, 2007 – Civil Attorney provided the police report to us. That very same day, the Civil Attorney started a background check on the Defendant.

August 1, 2007 – Preliminary Hearing rescheduled for 9/13 due to conflict with Defendant’s surgery schedule.

September 13, 2007 – Preliminary hearing reschedule yet again to 11/29 to accommodate the Defense Attorney’s vacation schedule.

November 26, 2007 – We contacted the District Attorney and were informed that the Preliminary Hearing has been cancelled and that the case will go to a Grand Jury. We were also told that the Defendant may plead guilty and that this person has 2 weeks to do so before it moved to Grand Jury.

December 2007 – The Defendant pleads guilty. Sentencing is set for March 2008.

March 27, 2008 – Sentencing day. Immediate family members were allowed to speak about how the experience has changed us and what we outcome we would like. The perpetrator was sentenced to the recommended maximum sentence.
